The main battle themes for the first six games in the series all originally began with the same arpeggio and bass riff before progressing into their respective main melodies. The first normal battle theme to not begin with the arpeggio is Final Fantasy VII’s “Those Who Fight” (although it does retain the regular bassline). Final Fantasy IX’s battle theme brings the full intro back, as part of an effort to recall the series’ roots.
“The Extreme,” Final Fantasy VIII’s final boss theme, also reprises the bass melody after the initial piano solo.
